Vietnam: Resistance Through Music Posted April 23, 2012, 3:54 a.m.

From the plodding protest marches to the rice paddies outside Saigon, the weight of these combat boots is heavy, dear listeners. And what better way to follow it, than through the music that drove the decade? I hope you can make it to the last song, because it will sink this thought in, like morphine in the wound.

Trifling Travels Posted April 16, 2012, 2:33 a.m.

At first I thought it sounded goofy, but if you look up the definition of “trifling,” it can be synonymous with lazy, frivolous, carefree, and all of these bands are kinda like that. Uplifting, and pretty beautiful as well, the playlist is more like an audio vibratory physiological transport device, so that accounts for the traveling bit. They’re pretty damn good, I think. But of course I would think that, I made the playlist. I’m more interested in what you think, really.

Eastern Voodoo Part II Posted March 5, 2012, 2:43 a.m.

Ladies and gentlemen, step right up! We’re going to once again dust off those volumes of eastern tzigane rroma gypsy, and get crazy. Klezmer, sephardic, and just a touch of vaudeville jazz for your circus-atory system; we have the screaming violins, we have the moaning accordions, we have the Persian dancers’ castanets. It sounds so erotic, doesn’t it?
And you know, some of it feels that way, yes. But more than that, it’s mostly just awesome. You don’t have to know any eastern voodoo spells yourself to be under its charms. So tie on the rupee scarves, don the top hat, and break out the grease paint, because anything worth doing is worth doing right.
